Paint and Powder Cosmetics Isopropyl Myristate is a lightweight emollient fluid that is composed of myristic acid (naturally occuring fatty acids from vegetable oils) and isopropanol.   This odorless, non-toxic fluid is a very popular cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredient, and used in a wide variety of cosmetics as a softening/thickening/binding agent, and lubricant in beauty products to provide slip and smoothness in application.  It also enhances and facilitates movement and absorption of other ingredients it’s formulated with, which is also why it is a fantastic heavy makeup and adhesive and remover.

Isopropyl Myristate is very mild and gentle to skin, and contrary to the popular claim that it is comedogenic to skin; there is no definitive or conclusive dermatology research to support this allegation.   It is the go-to product for professional makeup artists in dissolving and removing heavy theatrical makeups, especially rubber mask grease paints.  It's ideal for detaching and removing prosthetic appliances that have been glued to skin; so it's highly effective in removing spirit gums, matte adhesives, silicone adhesives, acrylic emulsion adhesives, and especially PAX paint makeups without damaging skin.  Isopropyl Myristate is also a fantastic, no-odor non-toxic solvent and smoother for many types of clay used in sculpting. Use sparingly with a soft brush and move on to different areas while the solvent evaporates.  It can also be used as a clay polishing medium when used sparingly.

To use it as a prosthetic appliance remover: find an edge of the appliance that has some lift to it. Then, work some remover with a soft brush or cotton swab under that edge of the appliance to ease the lift and release the appliance from the skin.  Do not pull or rip up the appliance, let the remover do its job.  Continue on with more remover in this fashion until the appliance is completely lifted off.  Be patient, as this is a slow process in order not to unduly irritate skin.  Apply more remover to clean away any adhesive residue remaining on skin. Follow with a light moisturizer to soothe and help bring skin’s pH back to normal.

PRO TIP: Paint and Powder Cosmetics Isopropyl Myristate can be used to thin out spirit gums.  You can also mix it with distilled water (70% distilled water to 30% Isopropyl Myristate) and use as a mild spirit gum remover, or to remove alcohol based makeups.
